Saint malo
Saint-Malo is a French commune located in Brittany, in the Ille-et-Vilaine department, and is the main port on the northern coast of Brittany. It is known for its rich maritime history and vibrant tourism sector. The city sits on a coastal rock and is famous for its well-preserved historic walled city (Intra-Muros), beautiful beaches, and the scenic landscape of the Emerald Coast. Saint-Malo has a strong maritime heritage, having been home to famous navigators and corsairs such as Jacques Cartier and Surcouf. The city features notable landmarks including the Saint-Malo citadel with its four corner towers and donjon, which currently hosts the City Hall. The ramparts surrounding the walled city offer splendid panoramic views of the sea and the nearby Anglo-Norman islands, making it a popular tourist attraction. Saint-Malo’s location on a tombolo, a sandbar protecting a bay, supports the creation and development of its port. The commune expanded through the 19th and 20th centuries, merging with neighboring towns like Paramé and Saint-Servan in 1967. Today, Saint-Malo is a lively seaside resort with a casino, charming villas, and many cultural and sporting activities including nautical sports, hiking, and events related to its maritime tradition, such as the Route du Rhum sailing race. The city also offers diverse accommodations ranging from hotels to seaside apartments, and a strong culinary scene featuring traditional Breton and seafood specialties.
